How Resetting Your Space Can Become A Ritual

August is here, and while that makes me think of crunchy, brown leaves and getting the Doc Martens back out of the cupboard, it also motivates me to do a mid‑year home reset. Maybe it’s the excitement of Autumn coming up!

I’m not one of those people who completely transform their decor with the seasons (though if I had a bigger house and more storage space, I would love to give it a go). But I do try to stick with the ‘out with the old and in with the new’ saying, to help reduce clutter.
Even though we all try to keep on top of things, even the most organised of people can end up with an area that becomes a dumping ground, even though we call it the temporary resting place. For us, it’s a small cabinet in the hallway, and a particular area in the kitchen, where things seem to get left and forgotten.

Resetting a space doesn’t have to mean getting rid of everything, though I do love a bit of decluttering. Sometimes you just want to change the feel of a space and make it more productive or calming. By turning things some may see as a chore into a mindful moment, you can benefit more than you think…

Slow Three-Step Ritual

1. Remove the Static

A great way to start an intentional home reset is to open a nearby window to let in some fresh air so the room can breathe. Take a moment to look around and see what needs tidying away, dusting/cleaning, and give it a pamper so it’s looking its best. As you do this, remind yourself that you’re physically clearing the air around you; don’t rush, and it will become a mindful home refresh you begin to look forward to.
I then like to light a sage stick and take a slow wander around the room (usually while noting other things to add to my to-do list), as I mentally pat myself on the back for creating a space I know I’ll be completely comfortable in. It’s a small task that I can sometimes see as a chore if I’ve been feeling overwhelmed, even though I know it will help ease the pressure. It’s a battle with the mind.

2. Choose Your Intention for the Space

What do you plan to use the space for? Decide whether it’s to be productive or a place to unwind at the end of the day. Add a handcrafted piece that complements the space and becomes a focal point you can’t help but gaze at whenever you’re near. The piece should either inspire you or make you feel calm. If it’s handcrafted and one-of-a-kind, you’ll appreciate it even more. It can be an ornament, a tray or anything that’s been made by hand with thought.

3. Let There Be Light!

Does the area feel too bright, too dim? If it needs adjusting, you could consider a table lamp that creates the right atmosphere. I don’t know if it’s a millennial thing, but so many people I’ve spoken to, like me, prefer to brighten their home with softer lighting from floor or table lamps, rather than using the ‘big light’. It definitely helps to create a cosier atmosphere.
